The holiday season, better known as the season of giving is currently approaching. Although your schedule may be busier than usual, one of the greatest things you can do in your free time is to volunteer in your community. The gift of giving and philanthropy go hand in hand. Here are some volunteer opportunities that you can do in Toronto to help make a difference this holiday season.
The Salvation Army
This non-profit organization has plenty of locations so just find the closet in your community and see how you can help. For years Christmas volunteers have helped the Salvation Army put smiles on families’ faces by providing them with clothing and gifts during the holiday season. Whether you’re dropping off food to homes or sorting through donated goods, any help will make a difference.
Loblaws located in Toronto give customers the opportunity to buy a turkey and donate it to the Second Harvest turkey drive. The turkeys are then distributed by volunteers to those who are in need. If you aren’t available on days of the turkey handouts you can even spend time in Loblaws stores telling people about the good cause. If you want to have a little more fun you can even dress up as Second Harvest’s turkey mascot!
If gift-wrapping is one of your greatest holiday skills then you should consider making your way down to Scarborough Town Centre. For a whole month, they offer gift-wrapping services to help raise money for epilepsy-related services and programs.
Habitat for Humanity
Known for their dedication to providing affordable housing to families, Habitat for Humanity holds an annual Gingerbread Build. Volunteers are needed to help set up, allow guests in and hand out gingerbread kits to all. The event consists of decorating events and even the selling of kits to go home with families. All of the proceeds will help low-income families during the holiday season.
Horizons for Youth
This Toronto shelter is always looking for volunteers to help out but during the holidays and colder months the more help the better. From general house keep up at the shelter to helping provide meals there are so many ways to help. Ask your friends and family to donate clothing whether it may be used or new. Horizons has been serving homeless youth for years and you can become part of the change.
